What is team coaching?
Team coaching will enrich your team’s appreciation of how it can best leverage its diversity to improve performance and deliver results.
It involves working primarily with the group as a whole – to develop its collective awareness, capability and potential.
An effective team requires a number of elements to be in place : a collective identity, purpose, vision, goals, structure, operating system and culture; and these need to be sustained and refined over time as the team’s operating context and membership evolves.
Whether the team is new or established, or going through a transition, one or more of these elements are likely to feature in your team coaching programme.
Our approach to team coaching recognises that a team is a system in itself, that exists and operates within a wider system – your business. Both will have prevailing cultures and behaviours, and the team will have a range of stakeholders who may, for example, provide inputs to it, run departments that are affected by its decisions, or have direct reports who are members.
To create the foundations for a successful coaching programme, we will consult with you to understand the context surrounding and within the team, and the perspectives and expectations of these different stakeholders: regarding the team’s performance, conduct and coaching goals; and any communication regarding progress.
This will need to be balanced with an appropriate level of confidentiality to ensure that source issues can be identified, discussed openly and resolved where necessary.
With your permission, we may use carefully selected tools to provide objective and actionable insights into the team’s preferences and inclinations at work; and into pivotal relationships that materially impact its performance. You can read about one of these, PROPHET, on our website.
In our experience, teams often discover at the outset that they have surprisingly little collective understanding of how to benefit from their diversity to mitigate risks and improve performance.
This realisation can create renewed motivation to forge closer alignment within itself and with stakeholders, resulting in more effective operation and consistent delivery of expected results.
