The Growth Mapping framework provides a structure and toolkit to help you assess your business and what it requires to create solid foundations for scalable growth.
It can be used on a stand-alone basis, or with the support of a qualified business coach who will be able to provide context and share insights gained from our work with other relevant businesses.
The framework is built to enable a simple, tick-box review of a range of features of your business, using a template and applying a clear and concise five point scale.
At its centre, the framework highlights three features that are the bedrock of these stable foundations:the ownership of your business, both legally and the felt sense of ownership of key employees and stakeholders; your business model, and whether it’s fit for purpose; and your operating system. If either of the first two are not in shape, then efforts to refine your operating system will typically be compromised.
Your assessment then considers your business from four viewpoints that are within your influence: looking backwards, at your formative experiences, to understand how they have shaped your business; inwards, at how well your business is structured, managed, and resourced today; outwards, at the value-added it creates, and for whom; and forwards, at where it’s heading and its chosen path to get there.
The choices you make within each of these viewpoints will shape the culture of your business and the resulting behaviours. Having taken these four viewpoints into account, your assessment then considers external factors outside your sphere of influence: trading environment, partners and suppliers, prospective stakeholders – future employees or investors, for example, and competitors.
To record your assessment of each element, the framework defines a five point scale for you to use which naturally creates a scorecard for your business as a whole, and for each of the viewpoints under review.
Using further guidance and templates in the toolkit, and in consultation with your coach if you have one, the framework will then help you to interpret these scores, identify your priorities, and translate them into workable solutions, strategies and plans.
